Study #2 - God's Moral Law
The TEN COMMMANDMENTS
There is but one real hope for our undisciplined generation which has lost the capacity to control itself. We will have to take seriously that formula for happiness given by God, called the Ten Commandments. As J. Edgar Hoover once said, "This is the surest antidote to stem the rising tide of lawlessness."

Here are God's ten commandments now. All good laws are based on the ten commandments. How long has it been since you read them over? Just now, read them again, but take a good, long careful look:

-I-
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
-II-
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
-III-
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
-IV-
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
-V-
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
-VI-
Thou shalt not kill.
-VII-
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
-VIII-
Thou shalt not steal.
-IX-
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
-X-
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Exodus 20: 1-18

This study will continue with QUESTIONS, ANSWER VERSES and COMMENTS

Did God Himself, really write the ten commandments? Exodus 31:18 "18 And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God."; Exodus 32:16. "16 Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets."

Note- This was so important, that the great God of heaven did not allow one jot or tittle to be written by man. Every word was written on stone by the finger of God Himself.

What is God's definition of sin? 1 John 3:4 "4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness." The King James Version says, "Sin is the transgression of the law."

Note- Sin is breaking God's ten commandment law. Since the law of God is "perfect" (Psalm 19:7) "7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;", it covers every conceivable sin. Keeping all ten commandments is the whole duty of man. (Ecclesiastes 12:13) "13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all." The KJV says, "Fear God and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
Saved by keeping the law?
Can anyone be saved by keeping the law? Rom 3:20 "20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin."; Eph 2:8,9 "8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast."

Note- No one is saved by keeping the law. That's a works approach to salvation and nobody has ever been saved by works. We keep the law because we are saved. Salvation comes only through grace as a free gift from Jesus, and we receive this gift by faith and not by works. The law does not save, it can only act as a mirror to show one is spiritually dirty, and needs the cleansing blood of Jesus. If one keeps the law to be saved, they are a legalist. Jesus freed us from legalism, but he did not free us from obedience. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments." Again, we keep the law because we are saved, not to be saved. It is so plain, none need err.

Why is the law an absolute essential for perfecting Christian character? Ecclesiastes 12:13 "13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all."; Romans 3:20 "20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.";

Note- The pattern or "whole duty" for Christian living is contained in the law. We show that we know Jesus by keeping His commandments. 1 John 2:1-4. "1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
God's Ten Commandment Law is written in the heart
What enables a truly converted Christian to follow the pattern of God's law? Hebrews 8:10 "10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people."; Philippians 4:13 "13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."; Romans 8:3,4 "3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."

Note- Jesus is the law in human form. When He is in the heart, keeping the law is a pleasure. Repentant sinners not only are forgiven, but the indwelling presence of God is the power that
brings them into harmony with the law. He did not and could not change the law, but he does change the repentant sinner so that they can measure up to the law.
But isn't a Christian who has faith, and is living under grace, freed from keeping the law?
But isn't a Christian who has faith, and is living under grace, freed from keeping the law? Romans 6:14,15 "14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!"; Romans 3:31 "31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law."

Note- A criminal freed by the grace of the governor, has not been freed to break the law. Neither are Christians saved by grace freed to break God's law. A Christian who commits adultery and
says it's all right, he's not under the law, he's under grace, is really under dis-grace. Christians are double duty bound to keep God's law as one's life is their sermon to the world.

X. Romans 7:7 "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”"
Are God's law, the ten commandments and Moses' law the same?
Moses Law
God's Law
Luke 2:22 "the law of Moses" Isaiah 5:24 "the Law of God"
Eph. 2:15 "law contained in ordinances" James 2:8 "the Royal law"
2 Chron 35:12 Written by Moses in a book Ex. 31:18; 32:16 Written by God on stone
Deut 31:26 Placed in the side of the ark Exodus 40:20 Placed in the ark
Ephesians 2:15 Ended at the cross Luke 16:17 Will stand forever
Colossians 2:14 Contrary to us, against us I John 5:3 Not grievous
Colossians 2:14-16 Judges no man James 2:10-12 Judges all men
Hebrews 7:14 Carnal Romans 7:14 Spiritual
Hebrews 7:19 Made nothing perfect Psalm 19:7 Perfect

Note- Moses law was the temporary ceremonial law of the Old Testament and it regulated the priesthood, sacrifices, ritual, meat and drink offerings, etc. All of which foreshadowed the cross. This temporary law was added "till the seed should come"(Galatians 3:16,19 "16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.") and that seed is Christ. The ritual and ceremony of Moses' law pointed forward to Christ's sacrifice. When He died on the cross and completed the sacrifice that the requirements of Moses' law pointed to, it became obsolete and came to an end. But God's law will stand forever. Ps 111:7,8. "7 The works of His hands are verity and justice; All His precepts are sure. 8 They stand fast forever and ever, And are done in truth and uprightness."
Satan uses religious leaders to deceive Christians into believing that God's law and Moses' law are one and ended at the cross. That there is two laws is made crystal clear in Daniel 9: 10,11. "10 We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. 11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him."
How does the devil regard commandment keepers?
How does the devil feel about the people who pattern their lives after God's ten commandments? Revelation 12:17 "And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."; Revelation 14:12 "Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus."

Note- The woman is God's true church and the remnant would be God's church living in the "time of the end." They are commandment keepers and the devil hates those who uphold God's law. It is shocking to hear religious leaders who deny the binding claims of God's law and make slurring remarks against them or minimizing them while at the same time, upholding the traditions of men. No wonder Jesus addressed this situation. Read Matthew 15:3-9 "3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” Look what David said in Psalm 119:126 "It is time for You to act, O LORD, For they have regarded Your law as void."

Finally, what is the attitude of the person who has been saved by God's matchless grace? Ps 40:8 "I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart."
